A certain memory is a controlling force in your life. It has roots in how you think and feel about yourself and how you relate to others. And while it’s not always in the forefront of your mind, it works behind the scenes to keep you guarded, on edge.
You know it’s time to finally move past what haunts you, but you’re not sure how to find the long-lasting results you’re looking for.
You’ve done a lot of soul-searching to improve your life. You’ve even been in therapy before. You’ve worked really hard to feel good about yourself and the direction you are headed. To be able to focus on what you want and need without always trying to make others happy. Every day you feel like you’re getting closer to the life you want to live. You’re finally to a point where you can connect with others and have relationships that truly matter.
But every so often as you move through your day, a memory catches you off guard. You struggle to remember just how far you’ve come. It’s as if you’re stuck in the difficult emotions the memory brings up and you can’t get away from the pain and anxiety.
Suddenly, you’re right back in a place of second-guessing yourself, striving to please others, and doubting your worth.
When this happens, you feel trapped by your past experiences. And sometimes it seems like you’re never going to actually move beyond your past. You’re defeated knowing that no matter how hard you try to get beyond the negativity in your life, you keep getting sucked/drawn back in.
That’s not to say you believed life should be happy-go-lucky all the time. Pain has a purpose. But you never thought you’d still be thinking about something that happened years ago. What you didn’t expect was how you repeat patterns over and over again despite knowing they are bad for you. You never predicted you’d have trouble moving forward. And you certainly had no idea you’d never be able to be vulnerable.

The EMDR Process
EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a therapy that helps people heal from emotional distress & trauma that resulted from negative life events. It is intended to help you integrate the events from your past, so you can have a less affected present and future.
EMDR is an 8 phase treatment where bilateral stimulation is used while targeting specific memories. Once targeted, the emotional processing of the events helps clients increase their own insights. The process works especially well if you are looking for an alternative to talk therapy for processing past events or experiences that keep you stuck in current life situations.
You and I will meet together weekly for 50-minute sessions. Typically, counseling continues for several weeks or months, but the duration of your time in therapy will depend on the complexity of your concerns.
Here’s what to expect:
WEEK ONE: Intake
During this initial session, you and I will meet to define the counseling relationship and discuss the details of informed consent. I will then gather information about your biological, psychological, and social history and how this is impacting your current situation. We will also discuss the benefits and limitations of therapy. We will explore your goals and expectations of therapy. Phase 1 of EMDR, information gathering, begins with this first session. We will also discuss coping skills and practice at least one in session that you can practice in between sessions.
WEEK TWO and Beyond: EMDR Therapy
An important component of EMDR or any trauma therapy is creating containment or a calm place so you can begin to work through your past and current experiences safely. This begins the work of Phase 2, Resourcing, where we will work together to strengthen already existing positive feelings, thoughts, and memories. We may also use your innate abilities to create positive resources for you to draw on during times of distress or when you are needing support and comfort.
Resourcing may continue through all the phases of EMDR. Once sufficient resourcing has occurred, we will transition to Phase 3-7 which includes identifying and reprocessing your triggering memories. After memories are reprocessed, we will work to install a positive belief about yourself related to the memory. Phase 8 is building a future template related to the memory and the work completed in the previous phases. In each of the phases and throughout counseling we will re-evaluate often to ensure you are feeling supported.
EMDR has a direct effect on the way the brain processes information and it works to release the emotions that are trapped inside the Central Nervous System. You and I will work together to recall a sensitive memory. Then I will stimulate both sides of your mind and body visually, auditorily, or tactilely in a side-to-side pattern using “tappers”, finger movements, or sounds. This repetitive process allows your disturbing memories to be reprocessed by the brain and helps you exchange painful feelings for more positive ones.
EMDR does not erase the memory but instead removes the emotional charge connected to the memory. It becomes just a memory, a difficult, traumatic event that happened without the attached emotional pain. You can think of this as going from watching a show on TV that is too loud and too bright to one where the volume and picture are much more tolerable.
EMDR is most well known for its effectiveness in healing trauma. However, EMDR is also effective in addictions work, attachment wounding, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, rewiring core negative beliefs, and many other challenges.
TERMINATION: 1-2 Final Sessions
In your final sessions, you will review your goals to ensure you are satisfied with your counseling experience and that the work you and I have done together has met your expectations. We will also outline a plan going forward so that you are able to retain what you have worked on together and implement all you have learned outside of session.
